It’s definitely more fun/engaging than leaning too heavily into its themes (feminism/1960s relationships etc).
The concept is what sells this novel as it felt so refreshingly original. It blends satire, romance, and historical fiction, all while being told through a distinctly contemporary lens. A winning combination that definitely kept me curious and engaged throughout.
Whilst it’s heavier in characters, it wasn’t hard to decipher who’s who, and Avis’s writing did a brilliant job of showing the differing dynamics at play. There is a feminist aspect which I loved, and perhaps would have found it even more interesting to lean into that further, but appreciate there was already so much to accomplish narratively speaking.
My only critique was the length, as there was potentially room to chop and cut sections to keep the pacing tight. That being said, a hugely exciting debut so I 100% recommend!
